06/2010 – Advanced architectural workshop: implementing structural logics into a design process for large scale lightweight coverings (scientific article)

The work presented in this paper is a part of a larger research effort in which we have been studying the problem of “mega-structures” and the relationships between shapes and their inner structural system. The most important question was: how can we control the relationship between an optimized structure and the image of a wheightless physical or virtual model based on a formal concept, far from structural hypotheses? Our research has developed a design methodology starting from manual sketches and evolving through physical, virtual and structural models, embedding optimization during the early stages of the design process. The core of this study is a form-finding process which modifies the initial shape into a new version, through the use of specific software.

03/2010 – Screenings and shadings (article)
The article is dedicated to an historical overview about screening and shading systems, which represent an ancient and widely adopted solution aiming at protecting internal environments from external natural lighting. The first part of the article explores historical western tradition, explaining traditional systems. Then the eastern apporach is explored, in order to generate a quick comparison between different cultures and technological solutions. In the second part of the article shading systems are studied taking into consideration the modern period, then shifting to contemporary architecture and technological innovation applied to façade engineering, keeping into consideration many different materials and technical solutions.

09/2009 – Digital fabrication and mass customization in building construction: some recent case studies (scientific article)
In the recent past, construction industry seemed to have few possibilities for development. Today, the construction process becomes more and more global with a high international competition and the industrial production is necessarily obliged to reply to the requirements of architects in terms of flexibility and innovation. New constructive modalities affect the work site, because the dry assembling creates difficulties for the traditional building company, less involved in the construction and more consigned to assistance for the parts constructed and installed by specialized teams on its own work site. Consequently, the organization for the construction of a building is destinated to change.

08/2009 – Energy savings and environmental sustainability in sport facilities (dossier)
This dossier is focused on the relationship existing between sustainability and different typologies of sport facilities. The study starts with a wide overview on the core concepts which define sustainability and its main characteristics. Then the article follows an historical path in order to reconsider the last sixty years of history in architecture, evaluating the progressive introduction and implementation of sustainability concepts into architectural projects. The main part of the dossier is then dedicated to technical analysis and thechical suggestions focused on the energetic optimization of architectural projects dedicated to sport facilities.

07/2009 – Architecture levels (article)
The article is dedicated to the analysis of level design and its implications with the world of architecture. The virtual environments design, conceived as scenery for videogame plots, has deep relationships with real-world architecture. This last can, by contrast, can be influenced by the possibilities offered by software used for the realization of these ambients, giving a contribution during the renovation of the contemporary space concept. The article go deep with some ideas from architects, level designers and critics who discuss the complex relationships existing between these two worlds.

05/2009 – Lightweight structures modeling through a physical simulation software (scientific article)
This publication is dedicated to a research project, developed at Department of Architecture and Planning (DiAP) – Politecnico di Milano, in cooperation with the Department of Informatics and Communication (DICOM) – Università dell’Insubria di Varese (Italy). The research project was focused on the development of a simple software that helps architects during the early stages of the heuristic process, through the application of a structural optimization process based on the catenary arch, as Antoni Gaudì did in order to realize his most imp
ortant projects.

01/2009 – Architecture players (article)

This article is focused on the analysis of some professionals who develop an innovativre approach toward architectural representation and design, availing the most important engines in the videogame’s world. The argument is introduced by some meditations about IT revolution and its history, going deeply with the analysis some international examples tnat consitutes the “best practices” of this new methodology.

07/2008 – Generative algorithms (essay)
This essay is dedicated to the use, considering a panshot international perspective, of morpho-generative algorithms in architecture. The argument is introduced by some meditiations about the developement of architecture after the digital revolution, continuing with the analisys of the most important examples of this projectual practice, which is relatively new, that comprehends programming as an instrument for the heuristic developement of an architectural object.

05/2008 – Projectual figures and digital modeling (book)
More than a merely design experience, the work which is presented is characterized as a research, where the principal goal is to reach the argued use of software in architectural design. There are three principal sections: the first is involved in a critical analysis of specific dissertations, in a range that starts form the use of perspective during its renaissance development and ends with the use of virtual reality and its many interesting applications. The second part is dedicated to the study of some best practices, that focuses on the principal design experiences of the architects that are most interested to the use of software in architecture. These are subdivided through four keywords: MODEL, ANIMATION, SOUND, LIGHT. For each one has been chosen a person and his method becomes the subject of a specific study. The third part is about the development of a specific architectural project, which concludes the dissertation.
Single author, published by CLUP, Milan, 333p., A4 format.
02/2008 – Architecture & animation (essay)
This essay is focused on the analysis of project methods which are based on the use of software initially oriented to the animated movies, subsequently acquired as an instrument for architecture adapting contents and functions to can produce completely unexpected results. In particular is pointed out an analysis on the American architect Greg Lynn, which has been a pioneer about this kind of approach to architecture. With his “blob architecture” he contributed to the evolution of contemporary architecture, during first years of the third millennium.

01/2008 – Architecture games (article)
Architecture Games is an article focused on the analysis of the actual characteristics of videogames, giving particular attention to the editing possibilities about the game environment by the direct user. Editing possibilities for “level” architecture are evaluated considering what architecture needs, in particular about representation and technical design, evaluating all the future available ways linked with the use of an apparently such unfamiliar instrument.
